In October 2004 newspapers in Mexico ran articles that out of 500 memBers of congress the pro-casino forces had 240 votes.

In November the Catholic church ran full page advertisements in newspapers all over Mexico that announced they were now for casino gambling in mexico as it had been fully explained to them how it would work and that THE CHURCHES WOULD GET A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF the governments casino income to offset their current short falls and to start back up again the many programs they have had to abandon over the last decade due to less offerings (actually since December 19, 1994 the day the peso wEnt from 3 to 9. currently its 11 pesos pEr usd. 

misc. facts: tourists and non Mexicans could walk into a casino with no problem. Mexicans would need a gambling bar code on their identification card that would need to be swiped at entranceways. to get the gambling bar code they would have to fill out a application that their wife would need to sign at the identification office and provide proof of who she was. the applicant would need to be current in paying his taxes in mexico and make a certain annual salary or income. if the husband blew the kids milk money @ the crap tables the wife could go before a board and state her case and the husbands gambling bar coded i.d. would be confiscated the next time he tried to enter a casino. she would have to be represented by an attorney and her oral remarks could not exceed 5 minutes. 

51% of the stock in the company that would own the land and building the casino was on would need to be offered on the mexican stock exchange. (non mexicans can own stock in mexico) 
the operating companies would need to be huge experienced las vegas type companies and would need to agree to build new hotels, police stations, fire houses, buy fire trucks and improve the infrastructure. 

the biggest effect this would have on mexico is the increased international convention business. of course the current construction boom would not only continue but triple in casino designated areas of which have been indicated to include but are not limited to marina vallarta in puerto vallarta as the infrastructure of hotels and services is already in existance, cancun, cabo san lucas, acapulco, cozumel, tijuana, nuevo laredo, guadalajara (4), mexico city (8), monterrey (2), this was the list given out at the government’s first casino gambling forum i attended years ago in Huatulco.  
the forum had speakers that were board of directors of the nevada and new jersey gaming control boards. they pointed out that the reasons given globally by anti casino people was that casino gambling would cause prostitution, drugs and police corruption. the commerce departments cabinet secretary replied to that “hell-we already have all that so what' the big deal”. this brought laughter from all 300 attendeEs.

THE GOVERNMENT IN URBAN RENEWAL FASHION BEGAN MEETING WITH HUGE DEVELOPERS, BANKS, GLOBAL COMPANIES AND STARTED RECEIVING PROPOSALS FOR NEW HIGH- TECH 70-87 STORY BUILDINGS THAT WOULD/WILL HOUSE HOTELS, (FOUR SEASONS WILL TAKE TOP 40 STORIES OF ONE NEW BUILDING THAT’S 80 STORIES) HEAD QUARTERS OF BIG CORPORATIONS, GLOBAL BANKS, INTERNATIONAL TRADING COMPANIES.

THE CONCRETE FROM THE 7-10 STORY BUILDING’S IS BEING DUMPED INTO THE OCEAN FOR HUGE RECLAMATION PROJECTS.

 IN APRIL 2005 WE SPENT 2 DAYS IN BEIJING. AFTER 2 DAYS OF TOURS I CAN AGREE WITH THE GOVERNMENT’S CLAIM THAT ALL FUTURE OLYMPICS WILL BE COMPARED TO BEIJING. THEY ARE NOT JUST WANTING TO SHOW OFF- THEY ARE MAKING A VERY LOUD STATEMENT ABOUT WHAT’S AHEAD. 

WHAT’S AHEAD IS THAT CHINA WILL REPLACE THE USA AS THE WORLDS SUPER POWER. FINANCIALLY AND MILITARILY. 

THE ESTIMATED NUMBER OF MEN WORKING ON CURRENT CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS INCLUDING BIG HIGHWAY BEAUTIFICATION PROJECTS IS 3 MILLION. I MIGHT ADD THAT FACTORY WORKERS MAKE US$80. PER MONTH! (US$1,000. /YEAR). THEY LIVE IN A 200 SQ. FT. APARTMENT THAT’S OWNED BY THE COMPANY THEY WORK FOR AND PAY US$10.-15. PER MONTH RENT PLUS ELECTRIC. WATER AND GAS. BASE PRICE. IN BEIJING NEW CAR DEALERS REPORT 1,000. NEW CARS SOLD NOW PER DAY THAT GO OUT ON TO BEIJING’S ALREADY CROWDED HIGHWAY SYSTEM. 

FROM THE AIRPORT TO TOWN WHICH IS ABOUT A 45 MINUTE DRIVE NEW BRICK SIDEWALKS FULLY LANDSCAPED WITH A LOT OF COLOURFUL FLOWERS, SCRUBS, HEDGES. (A 20 FOOT WIDE BICYCLE LANE IS ALREADY ON BOTH SIDES OF ALL ROADS. 7 MILLION BICYCLES IN BEIJING. 13 MILLION PEOPLE) ARE BEING BUILT AND PLANTED. ALREADY ON BOTH SIDES OF ALL FREEWAYS IS A 100 TO 150 FOOT TREE AREA THAT EATS SOME OF THE AUTO AND TRUCK POLLUTION. TREES EVERY 4 FEET APART. 

FROM THE CRUISE SHIP HARBOUR TO BEIJING IT’S A 3 HOUR DRIVE. 120 MILES. THE WHOLE WAY 100-150 FOOT TREE AREAS AND BEYOND THAT FOR MILES AND MILES ARE FISH LAKES THAT WILL SUPPLY MILLION OF FISH A DAY. THE LITTLE LAKES ARE PERFECTLY ENGINEERED SO BY THE SUMMER OF 2008 THE LAKES WILL BE A SPECTACLE FROM THE HIGHWAY AND THE AIR. IT IS HARD TO GRASP A 120 MILE LONG HIGHWAY THAT HAS LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WORKERS HOEING AND PLANTING TREES PLUS SMOOTHING OUT THE DIRT AROUND THE LAKES THE THOUSANDS OF BULLDOZERS JUST FINISHED. HIGH VOLTAGE STEEL TOWER ELECTRIC LINES ARE UNDER CONSTRUCTION ALL OVER THE CITY. THE LINES GO RIGHT OVER THE TOP OF 2-3 LEVEL HOUSES AND APARTMENT BUILDINGS. 

WE WENT ON THE BULLET TRAIN THAT GETS YOU FROM THE AIRPORT TO A NEW HUGE OFFICE /HOTEL AND SILICON VALLEY TYPE INDUSTRIAL PARK 30 MILES AWAY IN 8 MINUTES. IT GOES 267 MILES PER HOUR (438 KM PER HOUR) IT IS REALLY AN EXPERIENCE. RUNS ON MAGNATES! GERMAN BUILT. FROM DEPARTURE TERMINAL # 2 AT THE AIRPORT YOU LOOK OUT OVER THE RUN WAYS AND SEE - NOT EXAGGERATING, AT LEAST 100-30 PLUS STORY HIGH CRANES ALL WORKING TO FINISH THEIR PROJECTS BY EARLY 2008. THIS IS JUST IN THIS ONE CONSTRUCTION SITE. THE WHOLE CITY IS GETTING A FACE LIFT. EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK WORK IS BEING DONE. TEARING DOWN THE OLD AND UP WITH NEW HIGH TECH BUILDINGS. 

THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIP TO ASIA AND BOY WAS I IMPRESSED BY ALL THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS.

CHINA REPORT PART 2

IN JUNE 2006 WE TOOK THE SAME CRUISE WE DID IN JUNE 2005, FROM BANGKOK TO OUTSIDE OF BEIJING (16 DAYS).

THE MOST INTERESTING NEW DEVELOPMENTS:

SHANGHAI (20 MILLION PEOPLE) WILL HOST THE WORLD TRADE FAIR IN THE SUMMER OF 2010. THEY ARE TEARING DOWN ALL THE 25 STORY BUILDINGS THE GOVERNMENT BUILT IN THE EARLY 1950’S THAT HOUSED THE WORKER’S IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN. THEY ARE BEING REPLACED BY NEW BUILDINGS. - 1,000 OF WHICH WILL BE 55 FLOORS OR MORE, ONE IS 108 FLOORS.  ALL THE NEW BUILDINGS ARE TO BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE SUMMER OF 2010. ALL THE WORKERS THAT LIVE IN THE 25 STORY BUILDINGS ARE BEING RELOCATED TO NEW HOUSING ONE AND A HALF HOURS BY BUS OUT OF THE CITY.

WE WERE IN SHANGHAI ON A SUNDAY AND I NOTICED IT WAS A NORMAL WORK DAY FOR THEM. OUR GUIDE SAID CONSTRUCTION WORKERS WORK 7 DAYS A WEEK. 2-8  HOUR SHIFTS  PER DAY. THEY POUR CONCRETE AND HANG STEEL 16-24 HOURS PER DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK!

OUR CRUISE SHIP HAD TO TRAVEL 16 MILES DOWN THE HUANG-PU RIVER FROM ITS BIRTH IN SHANGHAI TO THE YELLOW SEA.

ONE THIRD OF CHINAS OCEAN GOING CARGO IS HANDLED ON THIS 16 MILE STREACH OF THE RIVER.

THE TRIP DOWN THIS RIVER IS UNBELIEVABLE. 16 MILES OF WALL TO WALL HUGE CRANES THAT LOAD CONTAINERS ONTO HUGE CONTAINER SHIPS 24 HOURS A DAY 7 DAYS A WEEK. WE SAW SEVERAL SHIP YARDS THAT BUILD AND REPAIR THE BIG CARGO SHIPS INCLUDING OIL TANKERS. 

WHEN REFERRING TO CHINA’S OVERALL NATIONAL PERFORMANCE, WHAT IS MOST FREQUENTLY CONSIDERED THE BEST, BIGGEST, MOST MODERN, EFFICIENT OR PRODUCTIVE IS FOUND IN SHANGHAI.

 Bill,

Thank you for your email concerning the availability of ocean front units at the Hilton.  To answer some of your questions:

The 17 & 18 numbered units are a "G" model that range from floor 7-22.  It is 1,028 sq ft with another 320 sq ft of terrace space for a total of 1,348 sq ft.  The maintenance fee on that unit is approximately $750 per month.  Insurance costs can vary, but I would expect something around $700-$1,500 per year.  

There are only 2 of that model on the market right now.  #1518 at $1,375,000 and #718 at $1,395,000.  Both face north with great views.  There is another unit that Nancy and I have access to.  It is a #17 unit facing south east on a very high floor that can probably be purchased for around $850,000.  The owner is motivated and willing to take a deep discount.  

We can not answer any questions about the rental program and have to refer you to the Hilton Representative for the building who is on staff.
